Why create SPORK when there are existing systems on the market?

I have over 20 years of experience building a curriculum for a school network that I co-founded, BASIS Charter Schools, which are consistently on top of school rankings lists in the United States. I did not achieve these results by using others’ curricula. I did it by learning from the systems around us, and then inventing new and better ones. SPORK is built in that same spirit.

SPORK Users

The SPORK platform is based on the cooperation of users with specific roles in the education process: the students, the teachers, the mentors and the authors.

1. STUDENTS

No aching backs for SPORK students! The learning materials are conveniently available to them, no matter where they are: in the classroom, outside the campus, or in the comfort of their homes. For young students (K-3) SPORK brings unique opportunity to acquire and practise knowledge with the help of interactive games.

2. TEACHERS

SPORK teachers obtain fully developed lesson plans that include any resources necessary for the instructions. These plans and resources are stored in Teachers’ iPlanners - SPORK tool for lesson planning. SPORK Teachers have flexibility to further enhance their lesson plans by adding own content.

3. MENTORS

SPORK Mentors are experts with teaching experience, who have the ability to manage curriculum content and can also provide support to Teachers on any level of centralization.

4. AUTHORS

Throughout history, schools have relied on paper textbooks. Authors using SPORK, both SPORK Authors and Tenant Authors, are changing this approach. They’re organizing instructional sources and curricular content in a modern, interactive way, thereby using all of the tablet’s possibilities.

ONDREJ KONAR

I value how the SPORK platform allows direct communication between the authors' teams, reviewers, and teachers. Therefore, content can be continuously improved as we receive user feedback, which enhances both the teacher and the student experience throughout the school year.

Piloting SPORK has brought together our Academics Team and Operations Team. Outfitting our students with tablets has created better communication pathways for our departments as we work together to maintain the best customer service for our families.

The SPORK Algebra I provides more depth than our previous curriculum. The variety of problems allows students to apply their skills more creatively. By the end of the year, they are able to tackle more sophisticated problems. It’s also a great place to share study guides, worksheets, and step-by-step solution guides.

SPORK highlights the importance that strong scaffolding plays in learning. It engages teachers in their lessons further than our previous curriculum. Teachers can easily reflect on the students’ understanding of the lesson. This level of engagement makes for better teaching and better learning.

PATRICIA PEARSON

On the first day of instruction, I held up both a math textbook and a SPORK tablet, and I explained to my students that the textbook represented curriculum that was static and inactive, while the SPORK tablet represented something that was dynamic and active. The students like that they can give input that is passed on to the developers.

SPORK Learning Content Overview

READY-TO-USE CONTENT

BUTTERFLY MATH & SCIENCE

Unlike the common practice of teaching math and science separately or having their own time allocation within a single course, at Butterfly Math & Science, K-3 students learn both math and science concepts every day and experience how these the two fields are related. The main goal is to increase the number of science concepts, demonstrate the relationship between math and science, and bring interactivity to the classroom using tablet technology.

READY-TO-USE CONTENT

SPORK MATH COURSES

SPORK Math courses for grades 4-9 create a safe and unique environment for gaining knowledge in mathematics. The spiraling curriculum is designed to develop advanced skills naturally, since students are encouraged to explore and discover laws and patterns in algebra and geometry by themselves. Every concept is profoundly elaborated upon in detailed step-by-step explanations. To support learning in various styles and strategies, each concept is presented using different perspectives and numerous visualizations and applications, along with insights into their historical development.

READY-TO-USE CONTENT

BUTTERFLY HUMANITIES

In humanities courses, we integrate language teaching and basic humanities topics. Whenever possible, newly introduced vocabulary, reading texts and worksheet content relate to the humanities concepts of the lesson. The tightness of this joint is quite loose at grade 0, but quite tight at grade 3. Students learn text content analysis, sentence construction and other grammatical concepts. They write their first paragraphs using the content of the humanities concepts of the lesson.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS CONTENT

BUTTERFLY MUSIC

The emphasis on formal music instruction stems from the fact that basic music theory is a perfect example of a logical arrangement of theoretical concepts accompanied by a perfect practical representation – sound. While students acquire a lifelong ability to read and listen to music, even those who have not progressed into playing instruments or singing as a hobby or professional appreciate gaining this useful general knowledge so easily at an early age.
